Spicemas 2018 was another great year of revelry under the Caribbean Sun
Scores of masqueraders took to the streets on Carnival Monday and Tuesday jamming to the most popular infectious Soca tunes of Grenada and the wider Caribbean region.
Monday Wear
After the wild and entertaining J’ouvert morning celebrations people took the streets in the afternoon for in their Monday Wear Mas- which translates to wearing fancy swim wear and body adornments but not the full pretty mas costume. This is lots of fun without elaborate feathered headdresses blowing in the wind- it more about having fun than putting on a show for the crowd of onlookers. You will also find less onlookers on Monday Afternoons and the route is also shorter.

Monday Night Mas
This brilliant display of lights is quite the sight. Thousands of people dancing, jumping and whining* and “chipping”** down just over a mile of seaside road, waving glow sticks and wearing light up head pieces under the moonlight. It is breathtaking, especially with the colorful glowing reflections on the water of the St. George’s Carenage.
- Whinning means Gyrating your waist to the beat of the music
** Chipping means rhythmically pushing your feet one in front the next while swaying your hips without your feet leaving the ground
Traditional Mas
Here onlookers have the opportunity jump into a time capsule and experience what the original Grenadian carnival looked and felt like. Shortknees flinging powder, while playfully jumping and chanting is a awe inspiring sight. Veuix Croix pronounced Vecco ominously march and stomp loudly wearing heavy platform boots completely disguided in long garbs bearing a large cross on their chest and their headdress. Veux Criox add to their haunting air by ringing bells and throwing their bodies around while arms flail freely. Some bands choose to depict historical events or circumstances like the middle passage where Africans were transported to the Caribbean to be enslaved by European colonizers. These bands have members from every generation- from enthusiastic toddlers to agile and spirited grandparents.

Pretty Mas
The pictures will speak for theme-selves. On Carnival Tuesday feathers, glitter, bright colors and gems elaborately adorn dancing gleeful bodies possessed by soca music and lots of rum dancing in the glowing Caribbean Sun.
